How to Use Heat Set Inserts:

1. Design your part with holes for inserts: The holes need to be a little smaller than the outer diameter of the insert and about 10-15% deeper than the length of the insert, so that the plastic will melt, deform, and mold around the insert properly. Different threaded inserts have different outer diameters, even if they have the same thread size.

2. Heat soldering iron to plastic melting temperature: Set the temperature right at the melting temperature of the plastic you're using or the extrusion temperature of your 3D printer.

3. ABS: between 490 and 700°F (255-371°C)

4. Plastic: between 356 and 428°F (180 - 220°C)

5. Horizontal method/Vertical method - Press the threaded insert directly into the 3D printer parts:

6. Place the insert onto the tip, and press the threaded insert directly into the piece if you keep the iron horizontal.
7. Place the threaded insert over the hole, use needle nose pliers or tweezers to hold it, and press the soldering iron down until the insert begins to melt the plastic and moves into position.

Easy to Exchange the Tips: 1. Unscrew the collar nut that holds the tip retaining sleeve. Make sure the iron is turned off and cooled down. Turn the nut with the knurling counter-clockwise to loosen until it's free. 2. Remove the soldering tip, which is over the ceramic heating element, by simply sliding the old tip off the ceramic heating core. 3. Place the new insert installation tip over the heating element. Guide the heating element into the 5/32" hole in the insert tip and position the tip as far down as it will go. 4. Place the sleeve back over the tip and screw on the collar nut. Bring the collar nut back over the sleeve and rotate the nut clockwise, finger-tight.
